Using FBML to create a custom tab on a Facebook Fan Page

This is a quick introduction (very basic) to using the Facebook FBML application to add a custom tab or custom landing page to your Facebook Fan Page. Short and to the point – would love to know if I missed anything or if you would like to see anything more specific covered. Leave a comment!

I wondered how people were able to customize a fan page. I’ll be trying this myself, thank you for the tip.

Great tips! I added an BFML tab per your video and inserted the HTML code for the Tripadvisor guest review widget. When I viewed it, however, the image did not show. Instead, all I got was a sentence stating how many reviews we have. Will this not work for this purpose?

Hi Francisco – I just tried that myself and you are correct, it does not work. That’s because it is a script and you cannot execute the script inside the FBML tab. There could be a workaround, but it would probably not be worth the trouble. Perhaps just a graphic with a link to the reviews would be the way to go here.

This video was beyond helpful and really appreciate you taking the time to create it. I just used your video to figure out how to add 3 custom areas to our Facebook page. If you have any advice as this was my 1st time doing a custom tab let me know after checking it out at http://www.facebook.com/shoptab

I was wondering if you (or others that read this blog) have a list of Fan Pages I should check out that may generate some creative ideas? If so, please let me know.

Hi. This is a brilliant video, thank you so much for sharing. I’m trying to create a ‘reviews’ page on my facebook fan page so that people can leave a review. I managed to to create the tab, but got stuck with the html bit…Could you help? Thanks so much!

This is where it gets tricky. I’m savvy enough to follow/figure out this stuff, but I don’t know programming well enough, HTML or FBML to do anything with the tabs. Have any tips?

Hi Patrick – check out some free HTML WYSIWYG editor like http://www.coffeecup.com/free-editor/ which will make the actual code on the tab easier to formulate. Just use everything that it creates between the and tags

@Svarna – Those are some good looking cakes! You should start with the “reviews” app from facebook – its free and will probably accomplish this task for you.

Excellent and easy to understand. Hope you do not mind but I will be getting the word out on this video. There is not really anything else like it out there.

Thanks Tim, after some fumbling around, managed to find the ‘Reviews’ app from Facebook! Thank you!

How to change my custom tab in to welcome tab?

  14. john james 29. Jan, 2010 at 11:13 am #

How come you glossed over the HTML? I would like a fan page and was following you, appreicating you nicely until BAM you simply said “oh and enter the code here” and blah blah blah.

I was shocked. I do not know code and do not plan on learning it. I am a decorator for God’s sake.

can you help? Is there a site that has the code to add a REVIEWS tab somewhere on line?

    thanks

  21. H.G Choi 25. Sep, 2010 at 5:27 pm #

I sincerely appreciate your work. It worked!!! I never even learn about HTML, but playing with your examples and trials was enough for me to add custom tab!!!

    I got one question:
All the letters are black, though header was coded as orange. Any suggestions?

    Hello,
    great post!

I think FBML is indeed very useful, but it´s very complicated as well.

Therefore I want to share with you our free tool on http://mashlab.com – mashlab makes it possible for you to draw new elements simply on the work surface using drag & drop. You need no knowledge of complex programming languages such as FBML or HTML.

Hope I could help you with that post! Best, Julian
